Bike problems often start with small things: loose brakes, a skipping chain or a loose headset. 2ratai.lt in Kaunas offers three service packages – Preventive (25 €), Standard (50 €) and Premium (100 €) – each designed for a bike in a different condition.

Not sure which package you need? Bring your bike in: we’ll inspect it, tell you what needs fixing and how much it will cost, and recommend a package based on its actual condition. The price of parts is always calculated separately. If your bike is electric, we repair the mechanical side – read more on the e-bike repair page.

  • How much does a service cost? Packages: Preventive 25 €, Standard 50 €, Premium 100 €. Parts are not included. Individual services are cheaper, for example, a brake adjustment is 6 €.
  • Do I need to call before coming? From 16 March to 14 October you can drop in Mon–Fri 11:00–18:00. From 15 October to 15 March we work by appointment only, so please call first.
  • How often should I get a service? Preventive – for a bike that is regularly maintained, Standard – after a year or more, Premium – every 2 years or for a bike that has been neglected for a long time.
  • Are parts included in the price? No, the prices of packages and individual jobs do not include parts. With the Standard package, replacing and fitting other parts is half price; with the Premium package, replacing necessary parts and fitting accessories is free of additional charge.

What the symptoms tell you: when it’s time for a service

A bike rarely breaks down suddenly – most often it “lets you know” through a noise, the feel while riding, or changed braking. Below are the symptoms people most often come in with.

01from 25 €

The bike creaks or clicks while riding

WhyMost often the culprits are a dry chain, loose bolts, or worn pedal or axle bearings. The sound changes depending on whether you are pedalling or coasting.

Check it yourselfClean the chain and lubricate it with bike lubricant, and check that the pedals are tightened firmly. You can find out how in the chain maintenance guide.

What we doDuring the Preventive package we check and tighten all components and lubricate the chain. Bearing overhaul is part of the Premium package.

02from 6 €

The gears skip or won’t shift

WhyStretched or dry cables, a derailleur that is out of adjustment, a worn chain or sprockets. Sometimes the derailleur hanger is bent.

Check it yourselfCheck whether the cable is visibly frayed or rusty, and whether the chain skips only on one sprocket.

What we doWe adjust the gears and, if needed, replace the cable, housing or chain. More on the page about bike gear adjustment.

03from 6 €

The brakes are weak or rub against the wheel

WhyWorn brake pads, stretched cables, a rotor or rim that is out of true, or air in the hydraulic system.

Check it yourselfSee whether there is still friction material left on the pads and whether the lever pulls all the way to the handlebar grip. If the brakes are weak, don’t ride the bike – bring it to the workshop.

What we doWe adjust the brakes, replace pads, cables or levers, and bleed hydraulic brakes. More details on the brake repair page.

04from 8 €

The wheel wobbles from side to side

WhyLoose or broken spokes, an impact from a pothole or curb, a bent rim.

Check it yourselfIf the wheel wobbles, don’t ride – bring the bike in for inspection.

What we doWe true the wheel, check spoke tension and, if needed, rebuild the wheel with new spokes or replace the rim. More on the wheel repair page.

05from 25 €

The handlebars wobble or the fork “knocks”

WhyA loose or worn headset bearing system, or an insufficiently tightened stem clamp.

Check it yourselfIf the brakes are weak or the handlebars are loose, don’t ride the bike – bring it to the workshop.

What we doAll packages include checking and tightening the headset bearings, and Premium also includes overhauling and lubricating them. A worn headset is replaced separately.

06from 8 €

The bike hums or is hard to roll

WhyMost often worn wheel bearings or bottom bracket – dried-out grease, or water or sand that has got in.

Check it yourselfLift the bike and spin the wheels and pedals by hand: rough or uneven rotation points to a bearing problem.

What we doWe adjust the wheel bearings, and with the Premium package we overhaul and lubricate the bearings. If needed, we replace the axle or hub.

07from 25 €

The bike sat unattended over the winter

WhyOver the months the tyres go flat, the grease dries out, and the cables and chain get damp and rusty.

Check it yourselfInflate the tyres, inspect them for cracks, and do the 15-minute pre-season check.

What we doAfter storage the Preventive package is usually enough, and after several years – Standard or Premium. Before any work we inspect the bike and tell you what is really needed.

08from 35 €

Mechanical part of the e-bike

WhyAn e-bike is subjected to higher loads, so brake pads, the chain, wheel bearings and tyres wear out faster.

What we doWe repair the mechanical side: brakes, tyres, forks, axles. Rebuilding e-bike motors – from 35 € + parts. We do not do electrical or electronics repairs.

Myths about bike servicing

  • Myth. If the bike rides, it doesn’t need a service. In fact. Wear happens gradually: stretched cables and dry bearings go unnoticed for a long time, but they speed up wear on the chain, sprockets and brakes. It’s cheaper to fix things early.
  • Myth. The Premium package is always the best choice. In fact. For a bike that is looked after regularly, the Preventive package is enough. Premium is useful when the bearings haven’t been overhauled for a long time, that is, roughly every 2 years or after a long period of neglect.
  • Myth. A new bike needs no maintenance. In fact. During the first kilometres cables often stretch, and bolts and spokes settle, so the gears and brakes may need adjusting even on a new bike.
  • Myth. Lubing the chain and pumping up the tyres is enough. In fact. That’s important, but it won’t let you check the headset, wheel bearings, spoke tension and the condition of the brakes. These are exactly what most often determine safety.

What each package includes

All three packages are based on the same check: all components are tightened, the handlebar and stem are checked, the condition of the rims is checked, the chain is lubricated and the tyres are inflated. They differ in depth – whether we only adjust, or also overhaul the bearings.

Below is the exact list of jobs included in each package.

  • Preventive, 25 €: brake and gear adjustment, check and tightening of the headset bearings, minor rim truing, check of the rims for cracks, check of the handlebar and stem, chain lubrication, check and tightening of all components, tyre inflation.
  • Standard, 50 €: tightening of all components, check and tightening of the front and rear wheel, bottom bracket and headset bearings, lubrication of housings and cables, check of spoke tension, minor rim truing, chain lubrication, tyre inflation; if needed, brake pads, the chain and cassettes are replaced. Replacement and fitting of other parts – at half price.
  • Premium, 100 €: overhaul and lubrication of the front and rear wheel, bottom bracket and headset bearings, brake and gear adjustment, check of spoke tension and rims, check of the handlebar and stem, chain lubrication, tyre inflation; replacement of necessary parts and fitting of accessories at no extra charge.

The price of parts is not included in any package – first we agree on the work, then on the parts.

Adjusting the bike chain and gears during a service

Bike repair or a package: how to choose and how often to do it

A simple rule: a bike that you clean and lubricate regularly and ride every day only needs to be brought in for the Preventive package. If you haven’t had a service for a year or longer, it’s better to choose the Standard one – it checks all the bearings and spokes more thoroughly, and worn parts are replaced. Premium – every 2 years, or for a bike that has been standing in a garage or on a balcony for a long time.

Compare with individual jobs as well: brake adjustment costs 6 €, gear adjustment – 6 €, chain lubrication – 2 €. If you need several jobs at once or don’t know what is actually worn, a package is usually more convenient, because it also includes checks that you wouldn’t order yourself.

If the condition of your bike is unclear, bring it in – we’ll inspect it and tell you which package makes the most sense. If you ride intensively (to work every day, in the city or in winter), you’ll need more frequent maintenance than an occasional weekend rider.

If you bought a bike a week ago and it „squeaks”, adjusting the cables is usually enough – the whole package may not be necessary.

Bike repair in spring: how to get ready for the season

In spring a bike most often suffers from having stood over winter: the tyres go flat, the lubricant dries out, and rust appears on the cables. Beforehand you can do a 15-minute pre-season check, look up the right tyre pressure and lubricate the chain following our chain care tips.

If after the check you have doubts about the brakes, gears or handlebar, it’s better not to ride and to bring the bike in. From 16 March to 14 October we work Mon–Fri 11:00–18:00, and urgent jobs, such as tyre replacement, we do right away. Until 15 March we work by appointment only and are not on site, so call first.

Want your bike to ride without surprises in spring? Already in autumn, take a look at how to store your bike in winter, and for general information about all our services, see the bike repair page.

In spring, service queues usually get longer – it’s better to ask about a time in advance.

Before you bring your bike in

  • If it is now between 15 October and 15 March – call and arrange a time.
  • Wipe off the worst of the dirt, especially from the chain and frame.
  • Tell us when and under what conditions you noticed the noise or problem.
  • Remove any baskets, child seats, bike computers and other accessories you don’t need.
  • Tell us when the bike was last serviced.
  • Bring the key for the lock or any other locks, if they are fitted to the bike.

From drop-off to pick-up

  1. Get in touch and agree on a time. During the season, come Mon–Fri 11:00–18:00. From October 15 to March 15, be sure to call ahead – we work by appointment only.
  2. Bring in your bike. You can drive right up to the entrance and park your car conveniently. Tell us what you’ve noticed and how you use the bike.
  3. Inspection and recommendation. We inspect the bike and tell you what needs fixing, which package to choose and how much it will cost.
  4. Work and parts replacement. We carry out the agreed work. If parts are needed, their cost is charged separately.
  5. Pick-up. We tell you what was done. Pick-up outside working hours can be arranged by phone.
